Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque

Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque in Dubai is a grand Islamic religious site named after Umar bin Al Khattab, the second Caliph of Islam known for his just rule and title "Al Farooq," meaning one who distinguishes truth from falsehood.

The mosque was originally established on the site in 1986 and underwent significant renovations in 2003, culminating in the opening of the current structure in 2011. It was founded and funded by Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, the chairman of the Al Habtoor Group, as a gift to the people of Dubai and as a symbol of devotion, tolerance, and cultural dialogue.

The mosque covers an area of approximately 4,200 square meters and can accommodate around 2,000 worshippers.

Architecturally, the mosque is inspired by Ottoman and Byzantine styles, heavily influenced by the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (the Blue Mosque) in Istanbul, Turkey. Its design features a large central dome rising about 30 meters high, surrounded by 15 smaller domes and several half-domes.

The mosque is also notable for its four tall minarets, each soaring about 60 meters, which serve as striking visual landmarks visible from many parts of the city. The pristine white exterior is complemented by intricate calligraphy and beautiful decorations, including hand-crafted fusaifisa tiles from Fez, Morocco.

The prayer hall is adorned with red and gold hand-woven wool carpets that add warmth and richness to the sacred space. The mosque is renowned for its spiritual atmosphere, aided by an advanced air-conditioning system that maintains comfort even in extreme heat.

In addition to religious functions, the mosque acts as an educational and cultural centre, offering lectures, Quran memorization classes, and Arabic language courses open to both men and women. It welcomes non-Muslim visitors for guided tours to promote understanding of Islam and Arabic culture.

The mosque’s construction was completed in just 14 months, a record in mosque building, showcasing meticulous planning and dedication. Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque stands as a landmark of peace, tolerance, and architectural beauty in Dubai, reflecting the emirate’s spirit of cultural coexistence and advancement.
