The Dubai Fountain is a choreographed water fountain system located on the 30-acre artificial Burj Khalifa Lake, at the heart of Downtown Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Designed by the California-based company WET Design, which is also responsible for the famous Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas, the Dubai Fountain is the world's largest choreographed fountain, stretching approximately 275 meters (902 feet) in length.
It shoots water jets up to 152.4 meters (500 feet) high, equivalent to a 50-story building, accompanied by a diverse mix of classical, contemporary Arabic, and world music. The fountain is illuminated by more than 6,600 lights and 25 color projectors, creating a spectacular nighttime display that can be seen from miles away.
The fountain system is composed of five circles of varying sizes and two arcs, controlled by complex mechanisms including Shooters, Oarsmen, and water robots that choreograph the water into dynamic, dancing patterns.
The Extreme Shooters can shoot water to the fountain’s maximum height but are used less frequently due to the high pressure required. The water jets are also complemented by occasional fire effects, first introduced temporarily during the 2011 New Year's Eve celebrations to enhance the visual impact.
The Dubai Fountain was built at a cost of approximately 800 million dirhams (US$218 million) and was inaugurated on May 8, 2009, alongside the opening of the nearby Dubai Mall. It quickly became a central attraction, drawing tourists from around the world who gather to witness its captivating performances.
In 2025, the fountain underwent a renovation involving repairs to its concrete base and upgrades to its lighting, sound systems, and fountain devices to enhance its longevity and performance. The Dubai Fountain stands not only as a feat of engineering and artistry but also as a symbol of Dubai’s ambition and luxury tourism appeal.
The traveler sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see.
