Sheikh Obaid bin Thani House is a historic building located in the Al Shindagha area of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Built in 1916, the house served as the residence of Sheikh Obaid bin Thani.
It was constructed using traditional materials such as stone from the sea, gypsum, mud, palm wood, and sandalwood, reflecting the architectural style and building techniques of the Emirati heritage at the time. The house is a two-story structure with 20 rooms, including a large courtyard shaded by a Pippal tree, which provided a tranquil setting for gatherings and entertaining guests.
The house exemplifies traditional Arabian architectural elements, including a layout designed to accommodate family members and provide separate entrances for female guests, adhering to cultural norms. It was restored in 1998 to preserve its unique character and now functions as a museum.
Within its walls, visitors can explore exhibits focused on Arabic calligraphy, including the history and modern applications of this art form. The museum also hosts workshops and lectures related to Arabic culture and heritage, offering both educational and cultural enrichment.
Located close to the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, another historic residence turned museum, Sheikh Obaid bin Thani House stands as part of Dubai's efforts to preserve its cultural legacy amidst rapid modernization.
The house and its museum serve as a window into Dubai's past, highlighting the craftsmanship, lifestyle, and traditions of the early 20th century in the region. It is one of the few remaining examples of traditional Emirati homes that have survived in the modern urban environment of Dubai, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark.
Dubai welcomes travelers with vision, safety, and scale.
