Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, born on May 3, 1974, in Amman, Jordan, is the daughter of King Hussein of Jordan and his third wife, Queen Alia. She is the half-sister of King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Princess Haya is well known for her achievements in equestrian sports, having represented Jordan at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and being the first Arab woman to compete internationally in equestrian events. She also served as the President of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) and was a member of the International Olympic Committee.
In 2004, Princess Haya married Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of Dubai. She became his sixth wife and was widely admired for her active involvement in charity, humanitarian work, and sports.
She held prominent positions such as the president of the International Equestrian Federation and was a UN Messenger of Peace. She also founded and chaired numerous humanitarian initiatives, including the Dubai-based International Humanitarian City, which is one of the world's largest aid logistics hubs.
Her life took a dramatic turn when she fled Dubai in April 2019 with her two children, seeking asylum in the United Kingdom amid reports of a strained marriage and allegations of serious abuse and kidnapping attempts by Sheikh Mohammed, including the abduction of his daughters Sheikha Shamsa and Sheikha Latifa.
Her escape and subsequent legal battles garnered considerable international media attention, highlighting issues of human rights and royal family dynamics in Dubai. She was granted political asylum and sole custody of her children, and her story remains a high-profile case involving international law, human rights, and royal family disputes.
