Floating Bridge, Dubai
Floating Bridge in Dubai is a unique pontoon bridge spanning Dubai Creek and connecting the Deira and Bur Dubai districts. Opened on July 15, 2007, it was specifically constructed to alleviate traffic congestion on the older Al Garhoud and Al Maktoum Bridges.
The bridge measures approximately 365 meters in length and 44 meters in total width, consisting of two parallel decks with a total of six lanes, including pedestrian walkways. Its floating sections are supported by 40 concrete pontoons, each about 115 meters long and 22 meters wide, designed to accommodate both vehicular pressure and wave action.
A hydraulically operated rotating steel section in the middle of the bridge allows for unobstructed boat traffic by opening and closing to permit navigation along the creek.
The bridge was engineered to support up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, significantly reducing peak-hour traffic congestion. Construction was completed rapidly in just 10 months, involving intricate engineering to ensure stability and durability amid the creek's unique conditions.
The Floating Bridge serves as an important traffic alternative and demonstrates innovation in Dubai's expanding infrastructure network. However, in 2023, the bridge was closed for maintenance and is planned to be replaced by larger crossings such as the Al Ittihad Bridge to better serve the growing transportation needs of the city.
