Fāṭimah al-Baqqālī

Fāṭimah Saeed al-Baqqālī (1974–2024) was a highly respected Emirati calligrapher, decorator, and visual artist whose work significantly enriched the artistic landscape of the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region.

Born in Dubai, she developed a passion for Arabic calligraphy early on and graduated from the Arabic Calligraphy and Islamic Arts Institute in 1998. She was renowned as the first Emirati Gulf woman to earn prestigious certifications in the Naskh, Thuluth, Diwani, and Diwani Jali scripts from Turkey, underscoring her mastery and dedication to the art.

Throughout her career, she actively contributed to the promotion of Arabic calligraphy through exhibitions, workshops, and festivals locally and internationally. She held key roles including project executive at the Dubai Center for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy and coordinator of the Dubai International Exhibition for Art of Arabic Calligraphy.

Her talent was recognized with multiple awards such as the Al Owais Award, the Emirati Women’s Award for Arts and Literature, and several first-place honors in calligraphy competitions. Her artwork blended Islamic heritage with contemporary sensibilities, fostering a bridge between tradition and innovation.

She passed away in 2024, leaving a profound impact on the art world.
