Dubai Financial Market

Dubai Financial Market (DFM) is a stock exchange located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, officially founded on March 26, 2000.

It was established to provide a regulated platform for the trading of securities such as stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), aimed at supporting the emirate’s economic growth and attracting both local and international investors.

Initially fully owned by the Government of Dubai, DFM transitioned into a public joint-stock company in November 2006 by conducting an initial public offering (IPO), which was oversubscribed by 118 times, selling 20% of its shares to the public while 80% remained owned by Borse Dubai, a government entity.

Throughout its history, DFM has played a pivotal role in the development of Dubai as a global financial center and has grown to host over 60 listed companies across diverse sectors including financial services, real estate, and industrial sectors.

The market capitalization has expanded significantly, reaching nearly AED 900 billion (about $244 billion) by early 2025. DFM has also introduced innovative financial products like index futures and real estate investment trusts (REITs), enhancing investment opportunities and market dynamics.

In 2008, DFM expanded with the acquisition of Dubai International Financial Exchange, which merged to form Nasdaq Dubai, complementing Dubai’s position in international finance.

DFM has prioritized transparency, investor protection, and technological innovation, implementing a robust electronic trading system that replaced the traditional over-the-counter trading methods prevalent prior to its founding.

Its market has attracted a broad base of retail and institutional investors, with a particular emphasis on engaging UAE nationals and increasing public investment participation through educational campaigns. The exchange is regulated by the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) of the UAE, ensuring compliance with global standards.
