The Deira Clocktower, also known as Dubai Clocktower, is one of Dubai's oldest and most iconic landmarks, situated in the bustling Deira district. Originally constructed in 1965, the clocktower was designed by Otto Bullard and Syrian architect Ziki Homsi, who was affiliated with Architecture Design Construction (ADC).
The tower was built as a symbol of Dubai's rapid modernization and to commemorate the arrival of a large clock gifted to Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum by his son-in-law Sheikh Ahmad Al Thani of Qatar. Strategically located at a key roundabout where major routes into Dubai converged before the construction of the Dubai–Abu Dhabi Road, it was initially envisioned as both a timekeeping monument and a traffic landmark.
Constructed primarily from reinforced concrete with a simple but elegant design featuring four clock faces visible from all directions, the Deira Clocktower served as a central point connecting the two older parts of Dubai—Bur Dubai and Deira—via the Al Maktoum Bridge.
Over the years, the structure endured wear due to environmental conditions, prompting a major reconstruction in 1989 that replaced the original materials with more durable concrete and upgraded the clocks with advanced GPS technology for improved accuracy.
The tower's design, characterized by its minimalist, circular arches that converge to support the clock, remains a testament to mid-20th-century modernist architecture infused with functional elegance.
As Dubai transformed into a global metropolis, the Deira Clocktower stood as a nostalgic emblem of the city's humble beginnings and its relentless development. It is not only a functional landmark but also a cultural symbol deeply ingrained in the collective memory of Dubai’s residents and visitors alike.
The roundabout surrounding the tower was renovated in 2023, adding greenery, a new fountain, and multi-colored lights as part of a broader urban beautification plan aligned with Dubai's 2040 Master Plan. Today, the Deira Clocktower continues to be a vital point in Dubai’s road network and remains one of the cherished historical monuments witnessing the evolution of the city over six decades.
Dubai welcomes visitors with safety, scale, and ambition.
