Air Arabia is an Emirati low-cost airline headquartered at Sharjah International Airport, with additional operating bases in Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Alexandria, and Casablanca.
The airline was established on February 3, 2003, by an Amiri decree issued by Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah. Air Arabia commenced operations on October 28, 2003, making it the first low-fare airline in the Middle East. It broke even during its first year of operations, demonstrating strong early financial performance.
The airline went public in early 2007, launching an initial public offering for 55% of its stock.
Air Arabia operates scheduled flights to over 170 destinations across the Middle East, North Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, and Europe.
The airline is known for providing affordable air travel without free onboard catering, although passengers can purchase food and drinks during flights. It also does not serve alcoholic beverages. Over the years, Air Arabia has expanded its presence through various subsidiaries and joint ventures including Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, Air Arabia Egypt, Air Arabia Maroc, and Fly Jinnah in Pakistan, among others.
Notably, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi was launched in 2020 as a partnership with Etihad Aviation Group to support low-cost travel demand in the region.
Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in a net loss in 2020, Air Arabia has continued to grow its fleet and passenger numbers, serving millions of travelers annually.
The airline’s business model focuses on efficiency, cost control, and customer accessibility, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers in its markets. Its operational excellence and pioneering low-cost service model have made it a leading player in the aviation sector of the Middle East and North Africa, contributing significantly to regional connectivity and economic tourism development.
The airline is managed by a board with notable leadership including Chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani and CEO Adel Abdulla Ali, reflecting its strategic governance and commitment to growth and innovation.
